One of if not the cutest of all animals, the Red Panda is as adorable as it is endangered. This small bamboo loving mammal is found in pockets of bamboo and rhododendron forests of the Himalayan foothills and south west China. Once thought to be a next to impossible to see in the wild, they are now seen regularly in a number of locations. As we begin to understand their lives better and get better as looking for them we have realised that this once very elusive species is now quite possible.

Royle Safaris has pioneered trips to a couple of locations within the range of the Red Panda in the last few years, one in eastern Nepal and one in Sichaun, China. With fantastic success on both of these trips we were delighted when comprehensive genetic studies found out that the red panda as we know it, is in fact two different species. One in the south of the Himalayas (namely Nepal, India, Bhutan and Burma) and one north of the Himalayas in China, particularly Sichuan.

The possibility of this species split from one to two species was not unknown to us, we have a team of zoologists and specialists working for us and we had been following the debate on whether red pandas are one or two species for years. But when the announcement was made we were very please as it meant we are the only company in the world offering Red Panda Tours to see both of these species in the wild.
