There are two island in the world which are home to the Orangutans; the South East Asian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Orangutans are the ‘wise old men’ of the forest and their long-limbs, bright orange coloured shaggy fur and wrinkled faces make them one of the world’s most famous species. Despite being one of the most endangered species in the world there are some places that are very good for seeing either species of orangutan in the wild.

For many years it was accepted that there were two species of orangutan, the Bornean and the Sumatran, but recent studies in Sumatra have described a third species the Tapanuli orangutan, known from some remote mountains in Sumatra. We are working on trips to try and see this third species, but currently we do offer trips to see the two more common species.

We include trips into parks and reserves to see fully wild orangutans as well as visiting various sanctuaries and rehabilitation centres throughout Sumatra and Borneo which shelter rescued, injured or orphaned orangutans. The need for these centres is due to the constant pressure the orangutan is under in terms of deforestation, poaching and capture for the illegal pet trade.

Whether seeing orangutans in the wild as they go about their business, moving through the trees, feeding on fruit and looking for mates or enjoying watching orphans and injured trips being rewilded and rehabilitated up close as they play; we are sure you will find your perfect Orangutan Watching Tour or Orangutan Tour with Royle Safaris.

Of course when looking for orangutans in either Borneo or Sumatra you will be travelling around some of the world’s most biodiverse forests and there are many dozens or perhaps hundreds of other species you will be able to see.
