What a country!! Immortalised by the life works of Sir Charles Darwin the Galapagos Islands burn hot in the minds of any wildlife enthusiast and these unique islands belong to the equally unique country of Ecuador. Being situated right on the equator the climate is nearly constant which has resulted in a plethora of vegetation types throughout the small country. These vegetation types range from the paramo, a highland tussock grass which dominants the Andes to the western tip of the Amazon Rainforest. But one of the most productive ecosystems here is the cloud forests and this is where we find the largest carnivore in South America the spectacled bear. To see these masked bears surrounded by the mists of the paramo with volcanoes and condors in the backdrop is a breathtaking site

But it is not just the mainland which interests us here, 600 miles west into the Pacific Ocean lie a group of submerged volcanoes whose tips break the barren ocean surface to produce home for some of the strangest wildlife in the entire world. This archipelago is of course the Galapagos Islands. Made up or 12 major islands and 12 minor islands the whole place has been isolated since the volcanoes erupted and created this new land in the middle of the ocean. The facts and history of these islands is well documented and anyone coming here will be well informed during their stay, all I will say is that due to the isolation and different pressures on different islands from to subtle climatic differences; the wildlife is very unique and very special. The slight variations in beak size and shape among the finches and mocking birds along with the various shapes in the famous giant Galapagos tortoises’ shells are great to see and you really feel like Darwin trying to figure out the consequences of all this and you can begin to see how he came up with the theory of evolution as you walk around the islands.
