Costa Rica is at the forefront of tropical conservation and ecotourism, a country with world-class protected areas and more forest today than 20 years ago there is huge amount of wildlife watching and adventure on offer in this exceptional biodiverse country. With a vast array of habitats and such a varied topography spanning the Atlantic and Pacific coasts we can guarantee a wide range of wildlife and scenery. Highlights include egg-laying turtles, the call of howler monkeys resounding through the jungle, brightly-coloured toucans and parrots, plus exquisite tree frogs.

Costa Rica is a small country filled with many ecosystems and an abundance of wildlife. It is world renowned among naturalists and wildlife ecotourists for its rich variety of flora and fauna. Amazingly and due to incredible conservation from individual, regional and national levels the country contains 5% of global biodiversity despite covering only 0.1% of the world’s landmass.

A staggering 25% of Costa Rica is protected in the form of national parks and other protected areas. This is a world record and helps provide anyone with one of the best wildlife watching experiences when they come here to experience the wilderness.

Costa Rica has long been one of the best countries for birding and bird watchers and flocked here for decades, the reason being that Costa Rica has one of the richest avifaunas in the world (with over 850 species of birds recorded here). In fact, more species have been recorded in Costa Rica than in the whole of North America.

But is not just birding and birdwatching holidays which make Costa Rica such a good safari destination. The country is also home to a vast wealth of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and plants. Many of which are best seen here than anywhere else in the world.

Species such as sloth (two different species), Baird’s Tapir, smaller cat species such as Ocelot and Northern Oncilla, and four species of primate. It is also home to the world’s fastest running lizard, and four species of turtle nest along its coasts (of which we often plan our trips to coincide with nesting or hatching).

Being one of the most popular wildlife watching destinations in the world we have a range of Costa Rica wildlife watching holiday itineraries as well as being expert in tailoring group and private tours on request.

Our Costa Rica turtle tours focus on the north and south coasts (the Atlantic and Pacific) respectively and are timed to take advantage of the four different species which come ashore to nest at different times of year. Whilst we include some nesting and hatching on our scheduled tours we recommend requesting a tailored tour if you are interesting a specific species of turtle or are more interested in seeing hatchlings or adults nesting.

We can also arrange specific mammal watching, herpetology tours, insect watching holidays and botany tours to Costa Rica if you are interested, we recommend looking on the below range of Costa Rican wildlife holidays or by contacting us.

Fact of the Day

Pythons can slow their metabolism down so much that their non-essential organs (liver, kidneys and stomach) shrivel up to next to nothing when they are not feeding. Once they catch some prey their metabolism increases around 40 times the and they re-grow their organs
