On arrival at Cuiaba airport, you will meet your zoologist escort and be taken to your accommodation in Cuiaba (4* hotel – Amazon Hotel). Your zoologist escort will be around all day for you to ask any questions before your welcome to Brazil evening meal and briefing on the tour.
Chapodao do Ceu
Today after breakfast you will be transferred from Cuiaba to Chapodao do Ceu which is the the gateway town to Emas National Park and home to a large population of maned wolves. The drive is a long one, approximately 8 hours, (and on request we can break the journey up with an extra night in Rondonopolis (halfway from Cuiaba and Chapodao do Ceu) for private tours). There is no other way of accessing this remote park as there are no airports nearby. We will eat along the way and on arrival you will check into the accommodation and prepare to explore the park tomorrow (accommodation – 3-4* hotel).
Emas National Park
Over the next 5 days you will be exploring the wonderful grasslands of Emas National Park and trying to find its wildlife. By travelling through the park in an African style safari vehicle you will be raised above the grassland and in prime location to see maned wolves, giant anteaters, white-lipped peccaries and possibly pumas. Maned wolves are seen here more often than anywhere else in the world and we would be in the expert hands of Brazilian naturalists who understand this park better than anyone. They regularly see maned wolves, Brazilian tapirs and the endemic cone-billed tanager in the park. We will spend as much time you would like inside the park during the day. Bringing a packed lunch with us we would be able to stay here all day and this will increase our chances of seeing the maned wolf as they wander the grasslands in search of fruiting plants and termite mounds. Spotlighting is sometimes possible on the peripheries of the park, however in 2010 an uncontrolled fire swept through the park and afterwards spotlighting inside the park was banned. We will try to include some nocturnal activities but the well being of the wildlife and national park has to come first. After each day in the park we will arrive back at our accommodation (3-4* hotel) in Chapadao do Ceu in time for your evening meal and a good nights sleep.
Today you will be transferred back to Cuiaba, we will make this in one shot again (8 hours) and on arrival you will check into the accommodation (4* hotel – Amazon Hotel) and prepare for the next stage of the tour tomorrow.
Today you will be taken to Cuiaba airport in time to catch your flight eastwards to Belo Horzonte. This large city will play host to us as we stay the night here before continuing to a little known area of Brazil tomorrow. The rest of the day, after arrival and checking into the hotel (3-4* hotel), will be at your leisure.
This morning you will leave Belo Horzonte and be transferred to Caraca Park. Once we arrive at the accommodation (Canastra Hotel – Monastery) and the rest of the day at your leisure. The real treat for guests staying at the monastery comes after dark when a small population of local maned wolves visit the grounds to feed on the fruite and dog food left for them by the monks. This started many years ago when the monks would leave left overs out for the towns stray dogs. However it turned out that it was the resident maned wolves who were taking advantage of this event and have been regulars here ever since. Whilst we do not usually approve of such feeding and staged events, we accept that this was not intentional and since then the wolves which feed have become reliant on the food. To stop feeding this small population could result in their local extinction and the monks are very aware of this and treat the wolves and all other wildlife with the up most respect.
Days 11 & 12
Over the next couple of days we will spend the days exploring the nearby Caraca Park Reserve and the evenings waiting for the long legged maned wolves to make their way up the stairs and onto the beautiful patio of the Monastery. The park itself here is well worth a good visit. With around 320 species of birds and 70 species of mammals recorded from the park you should not be disappointed. Amongst the most commonly seen animals whilst walking the many hiking trails are Atlantic forest squirrels, black-fronted titi monkeys and black tufted-eared marmosets. Will have a combination of meals at local resturants, back at the accommodation (Canastra Hotel – Monastery) or with a packed lunch and as stated above each evening we will wait for the star attractions at this very special part of Brazil.
This morning you will leave after breakfast and head back to Belo Horizonte and after checking into the accommodation (Canastra Hotel – Monastery) you will have the rest of the day to relax, buy any last minute souvenirs and rest before your long flight home tomorrow.
Today you will be transferred to the airport in time to catch your return flight home.
