Just Iberian Lynx Tour

During this 4 day wildlife tour you will visit some of the best wilderness locations in Spain for a range of wildlife, including a relatively large amount of mammals, which is unusual for Europe.
The dry scrub forests of southern Spain you will begin your search for the rarest carnivore in Europe and the rarest species of cat in the world. In recent years they have increased in number and when people hiking around the hills of Andalucia and birding groups started to spot this wonderful cat the world of the Iberian lynx was finally opened up for anyone dedicated enough to try and see one.
We have expert guides and know the best locations to spot one, so all in all we believe that this specialist and tailored Iberian lynx trip will offer you the very best chances of capturing these elusive species.

Holiday Breakdown

Day 1

Sierra de Andujar

On your arrival at our county hotel in Sierra de Andujar you will meet your local lynx guide and depending on your arrival time have the afternoon in the field looking for the Iberian lynx.

Days 2-3

Sierra de Andujar

For the next 2 full days you will spend time in the field looking for the stunning Iberian lynx. The rugged, dry and rocky hills and mountains of the region is some of the best preserved Mediterranean forest in the Iberian Peninsula. Primarily this is open and spacious oak forest, comprised of holm, gall and cork oak, though alder, ash and poplars are to be found at the margins of rivers, glades and meadows. In this quiet and relatively unpopulated region, Spain’s wild animals thrive. As well as Iberian lynx, wolves, Eurasian otters, Eurasian wild pig, European mouflon and western red deer are all to be found. These mountains also hold a large population of Eurasian griffon vultures, as well as good numbers of the rare black vulture and Spanish imperial eagle. Amongst the oak forest that clads these hills are grassy glades and secluded valleys where the lynx hunt rabbits, rest amongst the rocks, and raise their young in ancient, hollowed oaks. Here live the majority (perhaps 70% or more) of the world’s remaining Iberian lynx. Perhaps here, in a refuge from the modern world, the Iberian lynx has a chance of survival.
You will search for the lynx in a couple of ways, walking around the trails and checking out water sources and likely places for the lynx to be as well as staking out a few good vantage points and scanning the slopes looking for the lynx. All the time you will be with your local guide and able to decide on where you want to go and what you would like to focus on.
One massive plus of booking with us is that thanks to the connections of Jose and his team we have access to private estates around here, it is here as much as the national park (or more often at some times of year) that the lynxes are often found.

Day 4

Home

Today you will leave the hotel and make your own way to the airport for your return flight home

Please note that transfers from and to the nearest airport (Malaga, Granada and even Madrid) are possible. Please inquire if you need this service and we will quote for you.

Please note that the itinerary stated above is correct as our planned intentions for the tour. However adverse weather conditions and other local considerations can necessitate some modifications of the itinerary during the course of the tour; any changes will be made to make the best of the time and weather conditions available to us.

This tour is available on different date (subject to availability) please contact us for more details about running this tour on a date which suits you more.

Extra Information

Weather Conditions

The weather in Andalucia during late summer is usually very nice during the day with an average daily temperature of around 27degrees C. However temperatures of 35degrees C are not unknown at this time of year. The humidity is at its lowest during August and rainfall is very low, it is not uncommon to have a completely dry August..

What’s Included

Everything mentioned in the itinerary is included. Including three meals per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). There will be bottled water (approx 1ltr) available for each guest each day. We have our own private air conditioned vehicle with an excellent driver. We have a zoologist to escort you on all your excursions and local biologist guide who is an expert in all the areas we will visit.

All our excursions including guided walks, morning, afternoon and night wildlife watching and park entrance fees are also included. All accommodation and transport is also included.

Personal Equipment

We recommend you bring along your own binoculars or spotting scope as well as appropriate clothing; which should be light and airy clothes as well as comfortable walking shoes. Insect repellent is handy as there can be mosquitoes about during the evenings and nights. Andy medication, books or other items of a personal nature is of course up to you to bring along. Oh and please bring plenty of memory cards or film for your camera. Also do not forget sun cream, sun hat and sun glasses as the sun can be strong here during the day.

Included Equipment

We provide a comprehensive species list of all the vertebrates present in the areas we are visiting as well as some of the best field guides and reference books for the areas we are visiting. There is usually a spare pair of binoculars but in a group of 4-6 people these do not stretch too far.Camera Traps will also be used to try and capture hard to see wildlife in the dead of night (if local conditions allow) and we will also bring a spotlight for searching out nocturnal species after dark.

Extra Expenses

Nearly everything is included in this tour. The only things not included are international flights, travel insurance (contact us for more information one what is required from your insurance policy), any food bought outside of the three main meals, drinks outside of any offered with the meals and the bottled water provided each day and any items of a personal nature such as souvenirs and tips. Any applicable departure taxes and not included (but maybe included in the cost of your flights). Please check before departure. Also not included on this itinerary is the transfer from and to the closest airport to the hotel at the start and end of the tour. Transfers are possible and if you need please contact us and we will quote for it.

Flight Information

As we are based in Manchester we recommend flights from Manchester International Airport

We recommend British Airways or Jet2 as airlines that fly to and from Malaga. One of the best websites to search for the best fares is www.odopo.co.uk. They are accredited by IATA which means you can book through them securly.

Please contact us for more information about flights and we can provide you with a link direct to the flights from another supplier; in which case you only have to enter the passenger information and payment details. By using the any links you will leave our site and we at Royle Safaris hold no responsibility for the content on the site.

Visas and Health Information

If you are a British citizen you do not need a visa to enter Spain and citizens from members of the European Union do not require visas to visit Spain either. But please check with your embassy and your local Spanish High Commission to see if you are affected by any visa restrictions

There are no health restrictions or recommendations to visit Spain but please refer to your local GP for more information if you suffer from a pre-existing condition.

Reviews of this Holiday

I have been travelling to Spain for many years and always thought the lynx was more myth than reality, but Martin and Jose brought us to the perfect spot to see this ghost of Spanish plains.

The highlight would have to be the mother and 2 cubs sunning themselves around 20ft from the road!

Jose and I did have a pretty incredible sighting. Also, on the last night, we saw a kitten! That was definitely an added bonus.

Our wildlife highlights where the lynx and golden eagle feeding chicks. Overall we had a fantastic time and our guides were fantastic , took care of us and took us to some great spots for wildlife watching , they were dedicated and super enthusiastic .

We will definitely look into a similar type of guided trip again , if not exactly the same one .

We have a massive list of the wildlife sightings we had and the landscapes in the NPs were fantastic.

Our highlight was a close encounter with 2 male adult and sub-adult lynxes...(with ample time to watch and photograph/ film them sleeping, yawning and grooming!!). Also very glad to see two cubs playing with each other while their mom was guarding.  It was such a blessing to be able to see them 4 days in a roll. Yet it was truly exceeding our expectation. Credits must go to our guides Jose and Miguel

The wildlife highlight was Iberian Lynx and Spanish Imperial Eagle and our non-wildlife highlight were the landscapes and habitats of Sierra de Andujar Natural Park. We appreciate the hard work and expertise of Jose Sanchez in finding a female lynx and her two cubs for us to observe.

Thanks again for organising a great trip. The guides were very focused and found lots of wildlife for us. Seeing and learning about wolf tracks and scat was a highlight for us too.
