This tour is a great introduction to the unique environment, people, culture and history of Tibet. Guided by a zoologist and local birding guides you will see all of what southern Tibet has to offer. By travelling from Kathmandu north through the Himalayas and onto Lhasa. The wildlife in Tibet is exceptional and a treat to see with the spectacular backdrops provided by this remarkable place. This is an exceptional tour which explores the bird life of Tibet like no other tour. Along with birding and the chance of seeing rare mammals like snow leopards, Tibetan antelope and Tibetan gazelles you will visit all the amazing buildings here as well as stand in the shadow of the largest mountain in the world; Mount Everest.

Holiday Breakdown

Day 1

Kathmandu

On arrival in Kathmandu you will meet your zoologist escort and local guide before being transferred to your accommodation, level 4* (Hotel Himalaya / Royal Singi). Here you will relax and get ready for your Himalayan adventure starting tomorrow. Your evening meal will be at the accommodation.

Day 2

Kathmandu

Today will be a busy day, Kathmandu is a huge city with so many sights we will try and see as much as possible. Such as Durbar Square, Swayambunath, Bodnath Stupa, Pashupatinah, Patan and more. Your evening meal will once again be at our accommodation, level 4* (Hotel Himalaya / Royal Singi).

Day 3

Zhangmu

Today you will set off from Kathmandu towards the imposing peaks of the Himalayas and stopping for lunch along the way. The drive will take you to Kodari and the Friendship Bridge. Just beyond here is the town of Zhangmu which is the immigration point before entering Tibet. Here you will meet your Tibetan guides and spend the night. Your evening meal will be served at your accommodation, level – local guesthouse.

Day 4

Xegar

Today you will continue your journey into the Tibetan plateau and during the 6 hour drive through Nyalamu Pass and Lalung La Pass you will have fantastic views of the mountains including Mount Everest. En route there are chances to see some of amazing wildlife up here. The bird life is exceptional here and we will aim to see some of the 30 endemic species here as well as keeping our eyes peeled for marmots, blue sheep and possibly some of the very rare Tibetan antelope, Tibetan gazelles or wild asses. You will have your evening meal at your accommodation, level – local guesthouse (Hotel Everest).

Day 5

Tingri (Everest Base Camp)

Today we will rise early and see if we can see some of the special bird species up here such as bar-headed geese, lammergeyer and various pheasants, snow cocks and partridges, before driving to Rongbuk. You will pass through Pang La pass and have spectacular views of Makalu and Shishapangma before visiting Everest Base Camp and standing at the foot of the worlds tallest mountain. Your evening meal will be served back at the accommodation, level – 3-4* (Tingri Everest Hotel) and you will overnight in Tingri.

Day 6

Xigaze

Today you will once again rise early to try and catch some of the birdlife here before being driven to the second largest city in Tibet, Xigaze, and in the afternoon visit Tashihunpo Monastery. This is one of the largest functioning monasteries in Tibet and the seat of the Panchen Lama. You will have your meals at your accommodation, level – local guesthouse (Hotel in Shigatse).

Day 7

Lhasa

After breakfast, you will be driven to Gyantse to visit Phalkor Monastery and Khumbum Stupa. As well as Palkhor Temple which was built in the 15th century, its uniqueness is that its three sects of Buddism-Shaja, Ningma and Guolu stayed harmoniously in the same place. After lunch you will be driven to Lhasa, crossing the Karola Pass and Kambala Pass as well as visiting the brilliant turquoise blue Yamdrok Tso (Lake), the road along the Tibetan lifeline river Brahmaputra also known as Yarlung Tsangpo. You will have your evening meal at your accommodation, level – 3* (Tsedang hotel) in Lhasa the capital sity.

Day 8

Lhasa

Today you can enjoy the highlights of Lhasa, exploring this unique city is an amazing insight into the culture of Tibet. In the morning you will be taken to Potala palace, the winter residence of the Dalai Lama and the religion political nexus of traditional Tibet. In the afternoon you will be taken to Sera monastery, and visit the debating courtyard where monks are formally examined in an age old tradition of philosophical debate. Then continue on to the summer palace of the Dalai Lama, lunch will be at the Snow Land restaurant and dinner in your accommodation, level – 3* (Tsedang Hotel).

Day 9

Lhasa

After breakfast at the hotel, you will visit Jokhang and Barkor. Jokhang is the most sacred and central of all temples in Tibet founded by King Songtsen Gampo in the 8th century. Walking around the Barkhor’s inner pilgrim circuit lined on all sides with markets, shops you will gain first hand experience of what it is like to be part of Tibetan culture. Lunch will be served at Kyichu hotel Garden restaurant and you will enjoy a private dinner in the Mad Yak restaurant with special Tibetan dancing. Accommdation, level – 3* (Tsedang Hotel).

Day 10

Kathmandu

After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport to catch the return flight to Kathmandu. Once arriving in Kathmandu you will be transferred to your accommodation, level 4* (Hotel Himalaya / Royal Singi). The rest of the day will be at your leisure and you can enjoy the highlights of Kathmandu or simply review the best bits of the tour before your evening meal in the hotel or nearby restaurant.

Day 11

Home

After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport in time to catch your return flight home.

Please note that the itinerary stated above is correct as our planned intentions for the tour. However adverse weather conditions and other local considerations can necessitate some modifications of the itinerary during the course of the tour; any changes will be made to make the best of the time and weather conditions available to us.

Weather Conditions

The weather in Tibet in July is not too bad, there can be some rain but the sunshine most days. The temperature stays around 15-25 degrees C. But the nights can be pretty cold.

What’s Included

Everything mentioned in the itinerary is included. Including three meals per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). There will be an amount of bottled water (approx 1ltr) available for each guest each day. We have our own private air conditioned vehicle with an excellent local driver. We have brilliant local guides and zoologist escorts (where available).

All our excursions including treks, guided walks monastery and park entrance fees are also included.

Your visa fee for Tibet is also taken care of in the price paid.

Personal Equipment

We recommend you bring along your own binoculars or scope as well as appropiate clothing; which should be light and airy clothes as well as comfortable walking shoes. As the nights can be chilly we recommend you bring a fleece, long trousers, scarf and a woolly hat and as it can be rainy waterproofs are handy. Insect repllent is also handy as there can be mosquitoes about during the evenings and nights. Any medication, books or other items of a personal nature is of course up to you to bring along. Oh and please bring plenty of memory cards or film for your camera. Also do not forget sun cream, sun hat and sun glasses as the sun can be strong here during the day.

Included Equipment

We provide a comprehensive species list of all the vertebrates present in the areas we are visiting as well as some of the best field guides and reference books for the areas we are visiting. There is usually a spare pair of binoculars but in a group of 4-6 people these do not stretch too far. We also provide a spot light for nocturnal viewing (this is subject to local condition when we arrive).

Extra Expenses

Nearly everything is included in this tour. The only things not included are international flights, travel insurance (contact us for more information one what is required from your insurance policy), any food bought outside of the three main meals, drinks outside of any offered with the meals and the bottled water provided each day and any items of a personal nature such as souvenirs and tips. Any departure taxes applicable when leaving are not included (but may be included in the cost of your flights), Please check this before hand.

Visas and Health Information

All UK passport holders and most other nationalities are required to have a visa for Nepal & Tibet. Your Tibetan visa is included in the costs and you do not have to worry about this. We may ask for a photocopy of your passport but everything will be taken care of. Your Nepalese visa is easy to get and are usually issued on arrival at the airport for a fee. The fee for a multiple entry tourist visa valid for 30 days is £35. There are no mandatory vaccinations needed to visit Nepal or Tibet, but it is recommended to be protected against TB, polio, typhoid, tetanus and hepatitis A as well as taking a form of malaria prophylactics. Please consult your GP about your individual requirements for visiting Tibets soon as you have decided on this trip.

Due to the high altitude in Tibet a reasonable amount of fitness is needed but the altitude can affect anyone (regardless of fitness) so please read up or ask your GP about altitude sickness before leaving.

Reviews of this Holiday

The bird life is a little sparse but that is to be expected and we still saw plenty of birds and even a glimpse of a Tibetan fox. I think for me the tour was more about the Tibetan people and culture than the bird anyway.
